William was born in Glasgow, son of James and Janet Ramsay of 130 Taylor Street, Townhead, Glasgow.

He enlisted in Glasgow and died of wounds aged 18 on 2nd October 1918 following the action near Wervicq, Zillebeke Lake, Ypres.

William is buried in Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery near Ypres.
