James Reid was born on 2 December 1893, the son of Robert Reid, a plater in Yarrows Shipbuilding Yard in Glasgow, and his wife Catherine. In February 1912, when he was 18 years old, he went to work for National Bank of Scotland as an apprentice at its Glasgow Paisley Road branch. He moved to Glasgow Bothwell Street branch in May 1914, and became a clerk there in February 1915.
During the First World War Reid left the bank to go on military service, and by 1916 he was a Second Lieutenant in the Cameronians (Scottish Rifles), on active service in France. He was killed in action on the Somme on 23 October 1916. He was 22 years old.
