Evan was eager to enlist immediately. During the 1914-15 University session he trained in the Officer´s Training College and then enlisted as a private in the 17th Highland Light Infantry on 7 July 1915. In December he applied for a commission and was gazetted on 4 January 1916. He embarked for India in October and there spent some time in Peshawar, Ambala and Bangalore (India). During the summer of 1917 he was at the front in Mesopotamia. On 4 July he was gazetted lieutenant. In December he came with his Battalion to Egypt. While at the front in the Coastal Sector in Palestine, he was killed instantaneously by a Turkish shell on 27 June 1918.

Evan was the only son of Reverend and Mrs John Ross who resided at 39 Melville Street, Pollokshields, Glasgow. He had just completed his school course when the war broke out. Lieutenant Ross was destined for the service of the church. Shy and reserved, it was only a keen sense of duty which urged him to undertake military service.
