Peter was the second son of the four soldier sons Mr John Ross and Mrs Ross, 12 Whitefield Road, Ibrox, Glasgow.
He studied for the teaching profession and for a time was a teacher in Lorne Street School. He went to South Africa in 1911 to take up an appointment at Bensonvale and then he removed to Prieska. He was Vice-Principal of the Boy's High School at Graaff Reinet. In this action his bravery and his coolness under fire won the admiration of his colleagues.
He enlisted in the South African Brigade in August 1916. Landing in England in October 1916 he completed his training in January, and then he was sent to France. He was wounded at Arras, France, in April and was discharged from hospital in June. He returned to France in July.
He was killed in the attack on Westhoek Ridge (Belgium) on the 20th of September 1917.
