Lance Corporal Ross enlisted in June 1915 and left for France in October of the same year. He was taking part in a raid on the German trenches when he was killed by shell-fire on the way back. He was only 19 years old at the time of his death.
Robert was the youngest of three of the four soldier sons of Mr John Ross and his wife Barbara who resided at 12 Whitefield Road, Ibrox, Glasgow. While at school at Bellahouston Academy, he was a notable player in the football team. Prior to enlisting he was studying for a Second Division Clerkship.
Memorial: Lance Corporal Ross has no known grave but is commemorated at Loos Memorial, France; Bellahouston Academy Roll of Honour 1914-1918 and The Scottish National War Memorial.
