Wallace, William (1897 - 1917)

William was gazetted on 10 June 1915. After attending the Officer's Training School at Stirling where he passed first in the examination. He was attached to the 3rd Battalion of the Cameron Highlanders at Invergordon. At his musketry course, taken at Strensall, Yorkshire, he passed with distinction. Being detailed to the 1st Battalion he was sent to France and took part in the fighting on the Somme (France) in August 1916. He was wounded in the struggle at High Wood, France, on 3 September 1916 and was invalided home. On recovering he returned to Invergordon in November and was appointed Battalion Bombing Officer, a post which he held for six months. On 17 June 1917 he was once more back in France. While undergoing a severe bombardment in the lines to the north-east of Ypres, Belgium, he was killed at Passchendaele (Belgium) by the explosion of a shell on the 17 November 1917.

William was the eldest son of Mr and Mrs William Wallace, Ettrick, Hatton Gardens, Cardonald, Glasgow. As a pupil in Bellahouston Academy he displayed exceptional ability and a career of great distinction was undoubtedly before him. In 1914 he won the Dux Medal of Bellahouston Academy, took a good place in the Bursary List of the University of Glasgow and entered on the course for the B.Sc. in Engineering. He joined the University Officer´s Training College.
