On 9th September 1916 he joined the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders and after training was sent to France where he was transferred to the 6th Seaforths. He was only four months with the Battalion. On 31st July 1917 he was wounded severely in the thigh. He was removed to hospital at Etaples, France, where he died from his wounds on the 6th of August and was buried in the Military Cemetery at Etaples.
