Lachlan left Glasgow to join the Highland Light Infantry in May 1915, being then barely 17 years of age. He was killed in action at Festubert, France, on 7th June 1916.

Lachlan was the only son Mr John MacDonald, master mariner, a native of Machir, Iona and Mrs MacDonald who resided at 31 Tower Street, Kinning Park, Glasgow.
