James joined the colours in September 1914, on the formation of the Commercial Battalion of the Highland Light Infantry. He went to France with the Battalion in November 1915. He was killed in action on the Somme, France, on the 1 July 1916.
Eldest James was the eldest son of James and Jane Macintyre who resided at 290 Paisley Road West, Glasgow. On leaving Bellahouston Academy he took up a commercial career and was with Messrs John Bruce Murray & Co., ship owners and merchants.
