MacLean, Donald (1895 - 1916)

Donald was the youngest son of Mr and Mrs John MacLean, Boumont, Barfillan Drive, Cardonald, Glasgowand late of Vallique and Claddach Kirkibost, North Uist.
He was taking an Arts course at Glasgow University when war broke out. Lieutenant MacLean, who was known in many districts of the Highlands, fulfilled the Borreray tradition - "A soldier or a cleric". He intended to enter the ministry but died a soldier.
After training in the Officer´s Training College he was gazetted to a commission in the 8th Cameron Highlanders but on proceeding to France was attached to another Battalion of the same regiment.
He was killed in action on 12th October 1916. While in charge of a working party he was wounded by a piece of shell but before he could be removed he was killed by another shell which burst close by.
