In August 1914, Donald joined the Glasgow Highlanders and was sent to France in November of that year, thus qualifying for the Mons Star and Ribbon. At Givenchy, France, in 1915 he was severely wounded. He was invalided home and received his commission in the 6th Highland Light Infantry before going back. At Arras, France, in 1917, while with the 12th Highland Light Infantry, he won the Military Cross (Mons Star and Ribbon) and in the same year he was promoted to the command of a company. In April 1918 he was sent to Ireland on duty for six months but volunteered for service in Russia before the end of that time. On an expedition up the River Dwina, Russia, on the 15 September 1918 he lost his life by drowning.
Donald was the son of Captain William Smith Main, OBE (Royal Naval Division) and Mrs Main Madoc of Ibroxholm. He was an exceptionally brilliant student and gained high distinction at school and at the University of Glasgow. He won the gold medal and Dr. Mackinlay prize for Classics at the High School. He entered Glasgow University in 1910, took the Major Young Bursary for Law and graduated M.A. in 1913.When the war broke out he was on the staff of Messrs John Stewart and Gillies, Writers, West George Street.
