Malloch, Lyon R. M. (1891 - 1917)
Captain, 5th Bn. Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
Buried at Menin Road South Military Cemetery
Commemorated at Bellahouston Academy Roll of Honour
Lyon was the younger son Mr James MacGregor Malloch of Govan and Mrs Malloch, 13 Parkgrove Terrace, Glasgow.
On leaving Bellahouston Academy he went to Glasgow High School for a time and then was in business with James Miller, Son & Co., 79 West Nile Street. He was a good athlete and a keen player of Rugby.
Captain Malloch's interest in the Cadet Corps and Boy's Brigade led him to join the 5th Scottish Rifles in 1908. When war broke out he was at once mobilised and went to France on the 5th November 1914, as a Sergeant. He was promoted to Second Lieutenant early in 1915 and obtained command of his Company in July 1916.
He was Mentioned in Despatches on the 9th of April 1917 and was awarded the Military Cross. The Gazette notice says: "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He led his company with skill and great determination. It was largely owing to his leading that the Battalion reached an advanced point and held on to the ground until relieved."
He was killed near Ypres, Belgium, on 18th November 1917.
