Elder son of Captain and Mrs Manning, 2 Clutha Street, Ibrox, Glasgow.
He left school in 1910 and served his apprenticeship as an engineer at Harland & Wolff's, Govan.
In 1914 he joined the 5th Scottish Rifles but was transferred to the 1st Scottish Rifles, then stationed at Larbert. He was a member of the first draft that left Larbert for France in January 1915. He was wounded in the summer of 1917 but on recovering he was sent back to the firing line and took part in the Battle of the Somme, France.
On the 7th of May 1918, on the way from the trenches to rest billets, he was killed by a motor lorry. Private Manning was 23 years of age.
