Nicol was the younger son of Captain and Mrs Manning, 2 Clutha Street, Ibrox, Glasgow.
When he left Bellahouston Academy he went first of all to a solicitor's office where he spent fully a year but passing the Civil Service Examination for boy clerks he was appointed to a post in the Post Office Savings Bank, South Kensington, London. He was then transferred to Edinburgh where he worked in His Majesty's Office of Works.
Shortly before the war broke out he joined the 4th Royal Scots (Territorials). In May 1915, he was sent to Gallipoli, Turkey, where he was wounded in July of the same year and was invalided home. After being in hospital for some considerable time he was sent to Burntisland Fife. In October 1917, he obtained his commission and went to France early in 1918.
On the 6th of October 1918, he was reported missing and finally reported killed near Hulloch, Loos, France, on that date.
