Alexander Manson was born on 28 October 1885, the third son of Alexander Manson. In June 1901, when he was 15 years old, he went to work for National Bank of Scotland as an apprentice at its Glasgow Trongate branch. He left the bank in March 1906 to work for Bank of Africa, but in June of the same year he returned to National Bank of Scotland, becoming a clerk in its London office. In September 1912 he transferred to Glasgow St Enoch Square branch.

During the First World War Manson left the bank to go on military service as a Corporal in the Queen's Own Royal Glasgow Yeomanry. He died on 10 July 1917 from illness following wounds received in action near Armentières, France. He was 31 years old.
