John was the son of Mr William Martin, Headmaster of Strathbungo School.
On leaving school he continued his studies and in March 1914, became an apprentice civil engineer in the offices of the Caledonian Railway Company and remained with them till January 1915.
He enlisted as a private in the Glasgow Highlanders. In the summer of 1915 he went to France with this Battalion. After a course of training at Gailes in 1916 he received a commission in the 7th Scottish Rifles. In September he again went to France attached to the 1st Scottish Rifles but was transferred to the 19th Trench Mortar Battery.
He was three times Mentioned in Despatches. His last mention being in the New Year's Honours List, published shortly after his death.
On 6th November 1918, while leading his battery to capture a German position in front of Berlaimont, France, he was killed. He was 22 years of age.
