Masson, Allan Cameron (1899 - 1917)
Apprentice, Her Majesty´s Trawlers Cape Finisterre
Buried at The Tower Hill Memorial
Commemorated at Bellahouston Academy Roll of Honour
Allan became an apprentice on Her Majesty´s Trawlers Cape Finisterre in February 1915. Bringing a cargo from New York the ship called in at Falmouth on the 2 November 1917. On leaving Falmouth, on its way to France, the same day, the ship was torpedoed when about an hour out. As the ship sank in twenty seconds very few were saved and unfortunately Mr Masson, who was acting as Fourth Officer, was among those who lost their lives.
Allan was the eldest son of Allan Cameron Masson and Marion Georgetta Masson (nee Middlemass) Masson who resided at 22 Clifford Street, Glasgow. On leaving school he worked for some time in the office of Messrs Mackie Bros., Port Dundas. The attraction of the sea, however, was too strong for him and he made up his mind for a sailor's life.
Memorial: Apprentice Masson has no known grave and is commemorated at Tower Hill Memorial, London; Bellahouston Academy Roll of Honour 1914-1918 and The Scottish National War Memorial.
