William was the son of Mr J. Maxwell, 57 Copland Road, Govan, Glasgow.
After leaving school he served as an apprentice plater with the Fairfield Shipbuilding Company. He was a fine swimmer and polo player; and whilst in France he captained the Company's polo team.
He joined the 5th Camerons on 4th September 1914 and after training with the Signalling Section at Aldershot was drafted to France in May 1915. For a short time he had further training with the Royal Engineers and was promoted Lance Corporal.
On 25th September 1915 he was wounded at Loos, France. After lying on the field for two days he died in Chocques, France, on 27th September 1915.
