Tom was the fourth son of Mr and Mrs John M'Naught, 8 Percy Street, Ibrox, Glasgow.

He left school in June 1912. He was on the staff of Messrs Smith & MacLean, Mavisbank.

He enlisted in the 7th Scottish Rifles on the 15th August 1914. He served in the Gallipoli campaign (Turkey) from May to October 1915 when he was invalided home with enteric fever. On his return to the East in September 1916 he was on the Suez Canal defences (Suez Canal and Egypt) and then took part in the Desert Campaign.

He was wounded at the first battle of Gaza (Palestine) in April 1917 and was killed in action at the capture of Gaza on the 2nd November 1917.
