Milne, John A. 418089 ( - 1918)

John A. Milne

Company Quartermaster Sergeant, 7th Bn. Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)

Buried at Damascus Commonwealth War Cemetery

Commemorated at Bellahouston Academy Roll of Honour

John was the son of Mr and Mrs Francis Milne, 56 Clifford Street, Ibrox, Glasgow.

When he left school he began his banking career in the Govan Branch of the National Bank of Scotland. He then applied for and obtained a position in a branch of the National Provincial Bank at Manchester. He was very popular there and expected to be transferred to one of their branches abroad but the outbreak of war in 1914 put an end to his hopes.

Formerly a territorial in the 7th Scottish Rifles, he joined at once and later was sent to Gallipoli, Turkey. He saw fighting there and in Egypt and was lucky to get off without a scratch. After two severe attacks of malaria he was attached to Headquarters Staff in Alexandria, Egypt, where he served for over two years. He repeatedly asked to be allowed to rejoin his unit and finally his request was granted.

While he was going up the line towards Jerusalem he was once more attacked by malaria, to which he succumbed on the 20th October 1918 in his 25th year. He is buried at Damascus, Syria.
