Archibald was the youngest son Mr John Mitchell, match manufacturer, Govan and Dumbreck, Glasgow, and brother of Mr James Mitchell,
104 Earlspark Avenue, Newlands, Glasgow.
As a member of the 7th Scottish Rifles he volunteered and served throughout the South African War with the service company of that Regiment and the Cape Town Highlanders. At the end of the war he, like many others, elected to remain in South Africa and for many years was in business in the gold mines. When war broke out he was in business in the Argentine Republic.
In the latter he was in command of his company and it was whilst acting in that capacity that he was awarded the Military Cross.
After returning home he joined the 1st King Edward's Horse from Argentina Republic, Overseas Battalion and went to France early in 1915. He received his commission in April 1916 and saw much fighting with his regiment, including the Somme (France) and Messines (Belgium) engagements.
He was killed in action near Ypres, Belgium, on the 7th July 1917.
