Spence was the youngest son of Mr and Mrs William Wilson, Cedar Villa, Lenzie, Glasgow.
He received his business training with a shipping firm in Glasgow and later worked in an office in Bristol.
He was commissioned in September 1915 and, after training at Richmond, Yorkshire, joined his Battalion at Dunfermline. Proceeding to France, he was in action at the beginning of September 1916.
At the beginning of September 1916 he was wounded in a trench raid and he died the following day in a Casualty Clearing Station. He is buried at Dernancourt, France.
