Lieutenant Newman, who was born in Manchester but by 1901 the family had relocated to Glasgow and were living at 38 Park Road, Glasgow. Lieutenant Newman was killed in action, aged 21, at Vermelles on 28 June 1916.

He is buried at Vermelles British War Cemetery. He was the son of the late Levy and Mary Newman, of Glasgow.
