Claude was the son Mr Gordon B. Nicol and Mrs Nicol, 60 Clifford Street, Ibrox, Glasgow.
After leaving school in June 1913 he was employed in the office of Messrs J.B. Shanks & Co., East India Merchants, Gordon Street. Private Nicol was a fine footballer and was chosen to represent Glasgow in one of the School International matches at Hampden.
In February 1917 he enlisted in the 8th Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders but was later transferred to the 1/7th Black Watch. He was drafted to Fance in May 1917 and in the year that followed he was engaged in much severe fighting, including the third Battle of Ypres, Belgium, and the Battle of Cambrai, France, in November 1917. He was unhurt during the German offensives on the Somme and Lys (France) in March-April 1918 and was engaged in the French counter-offensive in July.
On 27th July 1918 he was killed in action at Marfaux Wood near Rheims (France).
