James was the second son of Mr R. D. Samuels and Mrs Samuels, Overbie, Hillington Park Circus,Cardonald, Glasgow.
On leaving school he was employed in the office of Mr John Allen, measurer, 224 St. Vincent Street.
In September 1914 he joined the Chamber of Commerce Battalion. After training for about a year he went to France in November 1915 with the Army Cyclist Corps 17th Highland Light Infantry, attached 10th Corps Cyclists.
He was killed on 20th June 1917. Private Samuels was 20 years of age.
