Matthew and Elizabeth (née Doyle) were married and lived in Glasgow, where they had two daughters and six sons - one of whom died in childhood. Elizabeth died in 1901 and a few years later Matthew remarried and moved to Old Kilpatrick, Dunbartonshire. By the time the First World War broke out in 1914 four sons were in the army. By the end of 1916, these four sons were dead.

Colin Sinclair, the youngest of the brothers, was born in 1895. He enlisted with the 4th Special Reserve in January 1913 and joined the regular army in May of that year. He arrived in France on 8th June 1915. He was killed on 12th October 1916 at High Wood, which was a place of intense fighting during the Battle of the Somme. Colin is named on the Thiepval memorial.

At the time of his death, his and his three brothers address was given as 19 Harrington Street, Glasgow.
