Duncan was the second son of Mr and Mrs Smith, 20 Carment Drive, Shawlands, Glasgow.
On leaving Bellahouston Academy he went to Allan Glen's and the Royal Technical College. He qualified as a Civil and Mining Engineer and was employed by Mr Harry W Lewin, 154 West Regent Street, Glasgow.
In 1915 he joined the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders and in March 1917 was gazetted to the 15th Royal Scots. He went to France in May.
He died from wounds received in action on 27th August 1917 at St Quentin, France. He is buried in Hargicourt British Cemetery, north-west of St Quentin.
