Robert was the son of Mrs R. Smith, 1 Church Road, Ibrox, Glasgow.

He was employed as a measurer.

On the outbreak of war he enlisted in the 5th Scottish Rifles. After training at various camps he proceeded to France where he was transferred to the 2nd Battalion of the Scottish Rifles.

He was last seen at Nesle (France) and after being reported missing was presumed killed on 25th March 1918. Private Smith was 23 years of age.
