William was the son of Mr and Mrs William Stewart, 13 Clifford Street, Ibrox, Glasgow.

On leaving school he studied in Hendry's College with much distinction and then started work in the counting-house of Messrs Charles Rattray & Co., Candleriggs, Glasgow. He had left and was employed by Mr James Gemmell, coalmaster. It was only to oblige his master, in the absence of the chief clerk through illness that he did not join up immediately on the outbreak of war. He was a splendid football player and was a member of Bellahouston Academy 1st XI. His sterling character and lovable disposition endeared him to all who knew him.

He enlisted in the 1/7th Scottish Rifles on 11th September 1914. He trained at Grangemouth, was promoted Lance Corporal there and left for Gallipoli, Turkey, on 22nd May 1915.

He was killed in action by a shell on 28th June 1915 having reached the age of 19.
