David was the son of Mr and Mrs John Struthers, 33 Nithsdale Road, Glasgow.

He graduated M.A. in 1914 and at the close of his training as a teacher.

He joined the 17th Highland Light Infantry in March 1915. He was wounded in the arm at the beginning of the Battle of the Somme (France) in July 1916. Sent back from hospital in France, he was transferred to the 6th King´s Own Scottish Borderers and was promoted Lance Corporal.

On October 19th, 1916, he was killed by shell fire in Mametz Wood, France.
