James Lennox Torrance was born on 30 August 1895, the son of Gavin Torrance, a commercial traveller, and his wife Jeanie. In May 1911, when he was 15 years old, he went to work for National Bank of Scotland as an apprentice at its Glasgow St Rollox branch. He became a clerk there in 1914.

During the First World War Torrance left the bank to join the army, becoming a Driver in the Royal Field Artillery. He died of pneumonia in a military hospital in France on 29 October 1918. He was 23 years old.
