Purpose:

To ensure the safe passage of members of the public through Merchant City footways.

Detail:

Planters are 2m x 0.6m in size and will be placed within parking bays. The planters will be planted up and maintained by the council's Parks teams.

All loading bays and taxi ranks will remain in place.

All current access both public and private within Merchant City shall be maintained.

Project Update: 16 September 2021

Following an independent review (PDF, 5 MB) which recommended the retention of those Spaces for People measures that could realise long term sustainability and active travel benefits, temporary footway widening infrastructure at this location, alongside urban greening will be kept.

Project Update: 20 June 2022

The recycled timber planters which have reached the end of their lifespan in their current form are being replaced with more robust, concrete planters. As these measures can offer longer term sustainability and active travel benefits, we will soon publish a Traffic Regulation Order which seeks to make them permanent features within Merchant City.
