Council awards contract to deliver key stage in £250million Sighthill regeneration

Published: 5 October 2016

Glasgow City Council's Executive Committee today (5 October) approved the award of a £36.54million contract for infrastructure work on the Sighthill Transformational Regeneration Area (TRA) project to Morgan Sindall Construction and Infrastructure Limited.

This contract will see construction works for roads, earthworks, utilities, drainage, landscaping and public realm carried out as part of the Sighthill TRA, and will begin in November 2016 with completion expected in early 2019.

Morgan Sindall Construction and Infrastructure Limited were awarded the contract after a tender process in which 64 firms expressed an interest; eight supplied a Pre-Qualification Questionaire; and five were invited to submit a tender.

The work delivered through this contract will see higher quality greenspace throughout the entire area, with improved wildlife habitats in Sighthill Park.  There will be ample provision for Active Travel, with new cycle paths giving Sighthill the status of a 'cycling village' with priority given to pedestrians and cyclists.

The £250million Sighthill TRA will, over the next few years, create a new neighbourhood with around 800 new high-quality homes for sale and rent; a new community school campus; a new footbridge across the M8, creating a 'street in the sky' to connect Sighthill with the city centre; a new road bridge across the railway to link Sighthill and Port Dundas; and improved parkland, allotments and public spaces.

As part of a wider workforce delivering this contract awarded by the council today, a minimum of 14 community benefit jobs - to be located on-site - will be created for the residents of local areas.

Councillor Frank McAveety, Leader of Glasgow City Council, said: "It is great to see the regeneration of Sighthill - the biggest such project in the UK outside of London - progressing so well.  Shortly after the turn of the decade, we will see the completion of all of this work, with fantastic new homes and a new school campus set in a 'green' environment, featuring new bridges connecting the community to the city centre and surrounding neighbourhoods.   I look forward to the next stage of the transformation of this area being delivered through this contract.  The regeneration will unlock the potential of Sighthill as it becomes an eco-friendly neighbourhood, one that is effectively on the doorstep of Glasgow city centre."

The next Sighthill TRA contract to be awarded - in early 2017 - is for the construction of a new road bridge across the Glasgow - Edinburgh Railway, and connecting roads.

The Sighthill TRA is part-funded by the Glasgow City Region City Deal.
