Glasgow looking forward to its first Walking and Wheeling Festival

Published: 30 April 2024

The Glasgow Walking and Wheeling Festival - which celebrates walking and wheeling and promotes active travel - will take place with a main event at Glasgow Green on 11 May, with themes walks around the city over the following two weeks.

The free festival will have a range of activities for families and people of all ages, including health walks around Glasgow Green, outdoor games, free bike repairs and services, taster sessions for adapted bikes, music, face-painting, arts and crafts, with the council's Avenues team there to provide updates on the development of these city centre public realm projects.

People can drop in at Glasgow Green on the day between 11am - 3pm on 11 May. In the two weeks after that event, the Festival will continue with theme walks across the city - booking is required for these.

Just some of these walks include Going on a Bear Hunt, an interactive storytelling walk for young families; Explore Hamiltonhill Claypits; Pollok History Walking Tour; Still Game for a Walk around 'Craiglang'; Cool Critters, a minibeast hunt at Hogganfield Loch; a Teddy Bears picnic on Cathkin Braes; a Woman's Heritage Walk; and Rediscovering Duke Street and John Knox Street.

Local artists Walker & Bromwich have been working with local schools and communities to prepare a Festival Procession.

Information on the Festival is available here.

The Festival has been organised by the Glasgow Avenues Programme in partnership with Glasgow Life and Sustrans, and is supported by a number of organisations who are volunteering to deliver the event.

Councillor Angus Millar, Convener for Climate and Transport at Glasgow City Council, said: "We can all look forward to the Walking & Wheeling Festival next month - which offers so much for people and families to take part in at Glasgow Green on 11 May and in the following fortnight. I am delighted to say that our Avenues and Countryside Ranger teams will be joining our partner organisations in delivering the fantastic series of walks all around the city during the festival."

Caroline Austin, Engagement Officer for Sustrans, said: "Getting around Glasgow is so much better when you're walking and wheeling! Not only is being active good for your physical health, it opens up a whole new world of exploration right at your front door. With activities for families of all ages on offer throughout the day, including exciting updates on ongoing projects across the city, we encourage everyone to head down to Glasgow Green on Saturday 11 May and join in the fun!"
