Overview

In March 2020 Glasgow City Council City Administration Committee (CAC) approved investment for public realm improvements along on Dumbarton Road, from Argyle Street to Dalnair Street.

Proposal

The principles of the design are centred around placemaking and the aims are to;

  • improve accessibility for all street users; slow down vehicular traffic with improved raised tables;
  • improve pedestrian movement with new street crossing; facilitate cycling connection into the wider local network;
  • improve the appearance of the street with greening solutions including planters and the creation of a civic strip on the south-side of the street hosting cycle storage.

There are plans to have a plaque commemorating the history of local emigration to Canada from the 1900s with a poem written by a local community member.

The proposal is a community-led initiative and emerges from the engagement of Glasgow City Council's Neighbourhood Regeneration Services with the local community as starting back in 2017. It has been co-designed with local representatives in accordance with their aspirations and requirement for the street.

Construction

The public realm works will be delivered by JH Civil Engineering.

Works are expected to start on 5 August 2024 for a completion by the end of 2024.

The project is supported by funding from Scottish Government's Placed Based Investment Programme and Sustrans.

Minimising Disruption

Unfortunately, some disruption and noise will be inevitable during construction however we will endeavour to reduce impact for residents and businesses as much as possible.

During this time, traffic management measures will be installed and maintained to make sure the works can be carried out safely.  Some parking and loading bays may be suspended to allow for traffic management and safe access to the site.

Temporary loading/unloading areas may be set up for deliveries. Exact dates and information about parking restrictions will be displayed on signs before work begins. We will ensure that access to your business or property is maintained throughout construction.
