Consultations
The design process for the Avenues has been shaped by extensive stakeholder engagement. These consultations included workshops, on-street engagement, and online questionnaires. The feedback gathered from these type of activities aim to shape the new placemaking approach to street design.
Consultation outcomes for Holland Street and Pitt Street showed strong public support for greening and active travel improvements but also raised key concerns around cycling safety, parking, and servicing. The concept of a "pocket park" was particularly well received, with a preference for the "Raindrop" design. However, concerns about contraflow cycle lanes and the need for clear and safe pedestrian crossings were highlighted. The consultation also underlined the importance of integrating active travel with wider city routes and maintaining business operations.
Key Design Requirements:
- Deliver safe, segregated cycle lanes, avoiding unsafe contraflow arrangements where possible.
- Improve pedestrian crossings and widen footways for safety and accessibility.
- Incorporate the pocket park design with features like seating and planting.
- Manage loading and business access sensitively within the design.
- Provide clear wayfinding and signage for active travel users.
- Address traffic management and calming to improve safety.
- Include green infrastructure and rain gardens with maintenance plans.
- Design to enhance place quality while supporting access needs of key stakeholders like MODA and local hotels.
