Local Housing Allowance

What is it?

This is the method of working out the maximum housing benefit entitlement a private tenant can receive.

More information can be found on the Scottish Government website.

How many bedrooms do I need?

You are allowed one bedroom for:

  • Every adult couple.
  • Any other adult aged 16 or over.
  • Any two children of the same sex aged under 16.
  • Any 2 children aged under 10.
  • Any other child (other than a foster child or child whose main home is elsewhere).

You can find out how many bedrooms you are eligible for using the bedroom calculator.

An additional room may be awarded in some circumstances.

Safeguarded claimants

Someone who meets our safeguard criteria may have difficulty managing their money.

Usually Local Housing Allowance is paid to the claimant but we can pay it directly to the landlord if we decide a claimant meets our safeguarding criteria.

To request that payment is made directly to your landlord, please use our  Safeguard Application Form (PDF) [181KB] (opens new window) . Please also see our Privacy Statement relating to this form.

If you have more than 8 weeks rent arrears, you can request that payment is made directly to your landlord using our  Safeguard Application Form (Arrears) (PDF) [218KB] (opens new window) . Please also see our Privacy Statement relating to this form.
