Self Build

What is it?

Self and custom build housing is defined as homes built or commissioned by individuals or groups of individuals for their own use.  Homes built this way offer a unique alternative to standard market housing. 

Building your own home gives you something very personal and flexible that suits your needs.  Self-build can be a challenging process, one of the biggest hurdles self-builders face is finding land, together with finance and planning issues. 

Glasgow City Council is committed to diversifying its local housing supply through supporting self-build to be a housing option within the City. 

Self-build Pilot

Glasgow City Council Developed a pilot project within Maryhill where 6 development plots were made available.  A plot passport process was also developed to provide a simplified approach to planning.  This pilot project is currently being evaluated to determine if this can be replicated in other areas of the City. 

Self-build Register

The new Planning (Scotland )Act 2019 (section 16E) requires all local planning Authorities to "prepare and maintain" a list of anyone interested in acquiring land for self-build across the authority area.  If you are interested in self-build please please contact us by Email to register on our Self Build Register or complete the Online Form.. 

How we will use Information on the Register

By signing up you will help us find out more about demand for self-build plots across Glasgow, where people would like their plot to be and the type of house they would like to build. 

We will use this information to develop Glasgow's Housing Strategy and to explore ways in which it might be possible for people and plots to be brought together.  Registration does not however guarantee that a suitable plot will be identified or become available.
