What is it?

Please note Applications closing date for the Summer Internship Programme 2021 is at midnight on Sunday 28th February 2021.

Glasgow City Council's Annual Summer Internship Programme has run successfully every year since the original pilot in 2011.  The programme offers Glasgow's residents who are about to graduate with an HND qualification, and those in their penultimate undergraduate university year, work experience on projects identified as a business need by various council services.

Interns are supported through a 12 week work programme on these business projects and paid the Glasgow Living Wage, including 6 days paid annual leave at the end of their work placement.  The programme offers students valuable work experience and the opportunity to impart their knowledge on the projects they undertake as well as the team members they are working with. 

This programme is highly praised by the services taking part as well as the interns, expressing their enjoyment of the experience and the invaluable work carried out.

A number of former interns have indicated that this experience has been pivotal in securing employment after graduation, including with the council itself.

Eligibility

To be eligible, student applicants must:

  • be due to graduate this year from college for HND positions
  • be in their penultimate undergraduate year for university undergraduate positions
  • live at a Glasgow city address, to find out if you are eligible check the Scottish Government's website - to find your Local Authority
  • be eligible to live and work in the UK

Placements

The internship programme:

  • will run for a 12 week period from Monday 7 June 2021 until Friday 27 August 2021.  
  • Interns will be paid the Glasgow Living Wage of £9.50 per hour and receive an additional 6 days' pay for accrued leave at the end of their 12 weeks.
  • Students should not be planning to take time off during the period of their internship.

  • Each available intern post has a unique link to MyJobScotland for the completion and submission of applications.
  • Applications close on 28 February 2021.
  • When applying students should state their place of study on their application as this will assist feedback to their respective universities and colleges.
  • Interviews will be held during March.

Corporate Human Resources Intern - Human Resources Team

Two interns are required to assist with the implementation of our Equalities and Health & Wellbeing at Work Strategy pan council via the delivery of key activities, events and communications.

Housing Strategy Intern - Housing and Regeneration Services

A student that is studying a HND in media studies, business administration, art/design, IT computing or social sciences with an interest in housing. Based in the Housing Strategy team, the role will involve undertaking a project to review information and communications for Housing and Regeneration Services.

The project will involve developing a portfolio that focuses on identifying good design and effective communications practice, as well as undertaking interviews with key partners, assisting with market research design focus group, preparing a summary report and presenting an overview of the project's key findings.

HND Graduate Employability Support Services - Economic Development Services

To undertake a mapping exercise of the City's employment support provision for people facing significant barriers to employment including those falling within protected characteristic groups and the 16 -24 age group.

Through desk based research and consultations with key stakeholders including service providers you will carry out research to identify good practice and any gaps in service provision with recommendations for improvements.

You will be required to present your findings and recommendations in both written report and verbal presentation to the Economic Development Management Team.

Home Care Communications Strategy Project intern - Health and Social Care Partnership Home Care Service

This role is for an enthusiastic intern looking to influence organisational development and communication. The role will be:

  • To research and review how companies and organisations communicate with their workforce of all levels
  • To make recommendations based on the research
  • Develop an implementation plan

Allotment/Growing Spaces Mapping Intern - Parks Development and Bereavement Services

A student that is studying either landscape architecture, geology, or geography with an interest in GIS. Based in Neighbourhoods and Sustainability, the role will involve undertaking research to develop proposals that can inform and shape the future provision of allotments and growing spaces across the City.

Intelligence Hub Assistant (Economics) - Chief Executive's Glasgow City Region Team

To work with Intelligence Hub to help obtain economic data from existing sources, analyse the data to get a better understanding of who works where, and provide a report on the City Region's spatial economy.

To work with Intelligence Hub to analyse and map how the Glasgow City Region economy functions - focus will be on producing outputs that show who works where and in what sectors.

Legal Services Intern - Legal Services

Legal student intern based within the property teams in Corporate and property Law, Legal Services - to carry out a review of titles to assess Common Good status; to prepare for voluntary registration of the council's titles; to assist with community asset transfers and a review of the CAT process.

Development of options and proposals for a markets marketing strategy, and options for the development of a new permanent market.

Economic Development Digital Skills Support Analysis - Economic Development Services

This project will establish the use of digital and its maturity of 2/3 of the City key sectors initially. This is effectively a pilot to develop an approach which could then be applied across the other key sectors.

The project will also identify what best practice would look like and provide recommendations on how this can be achieved.

Glasgow Canal Regeneration Intern - Housing and Regeneration Services

A student that is studying a social science or architecture degree with an interest in housing, community regeneration and place-making. Based in the Housing Strategy team, the role will involve undertaking research and analysis of the Canal Action Plan, the key policy document framing the physical regeneration of the Canal and north area of the city.

The internship will involve liaising with a range of council colleagues as well as external partners, including Scottish Canals.

Student Intern (Internship Programme 2021) - Housing and Regeneration Services

A student that is studying a social science degree with an interest in housing. Based in the Housing Strategy team, the role will involve undertaking research to inform the development of a Digital Housing Strategy. The research will focus on identifying opportunities for improving digital services, connectivity and technology in Glasgow's affordable housing sector.

The project will involve collating and analysing data collected via surveys, interviews with RSLs and other stakeholders, undertaking online research and writing a report, which will provide an overview of the findings.

Funded Programme Review Intern - Economic Development Services

Glasgow City Council has supported a number of businesses access grant funding based on conditions that are often linked to economic growth drivers, such as creating jobs and increasing turnover.

A key challenge exists in terms of evaluating whether the existing process that has been used for considerable time is a robust and effective way of awarding grants to businesses. There is also no evidence of re-visiting awards and exploring instances where performance doesn't meet the information provided at application stage.

Roads Asset Officer Internship - NAS Roads Maintenance

The candidate will be responsible for the delivery of a footway asset management report which will be essential in determining the condition and investment required to maintain and improve this infrastructure and assist with the budget setting process and identify where investment should be prioritised.
