Pollok Country Park - Stables and Sawmill Project

This is an exciting project that restores the historical stables and sawmill. This project will restore these significant heritage structures, ensuring that they remain integral parts of the park's rich history and community.

This project seeks to revive their use as a new visitor attraction within the park; a Living Heritage Centre that:

Brings Clydesdale Horses back to the site
Tells the story of energy production on the estate, from the power of the horse to the changing technologies related to hydro power
Tells the story of the stables and sawmill in the context of the estate
Creates a net-zero attraction with visitor cafe which acts as a demonstrator for renewable technologies and provides a visitor centre that conveys the Council's approach to achieve netzero targets

Phase 1, which focused on stabilisation works, has now completed. City Property and Reigart have been on site since March 2022 and have now stabilised the existing South and West ranges of the buildings and have introduced a temporary supporting structure which will protect the building until the main works commence. A temporary roof covering is also now in place to give this area further protection. Phase 1 was extended to include Works on asset protection/ additional repairs, which focused on the East wing have also now completed

Due to the listed nature of the buildings, a number of specialists were involved with expertise in slate, timber and stone as well as a conservation architect.

Additional repair works included:

Patch repair of roof slating to the east range and renewal of leadwork
Rot repair works Replacement rainwater goods with like for like cast iron gutters and downpipes
Removal of unsympathetic pointing to Laighe castle to allow drying out
Replacement of rooflights Rebuilding of previously downtaken chimneys Complete re-slating of a small section of roof with new slates, to act as sample for main works.

The design team are currently working through the final design stage and it is expected that the contractor carrying out the main package of works will be on site towards the end of the year (2024).

A planning application was submitted in January 2024. We are awaiting the outcome of this, however GCC officers and project architects have been engaging with Planning throughout this process and a decision is expected in September 2024.

The project is expected to be complete early 2026.

Progress is being made on the development of the operational model and activity plan.

In February 2024, GCC published a Prior Information Notice on Public Contracts Scotland, seeking a potential equine operator.

We can confirm that several notes of interest were received and these are currently being reviewed by officers.
