Register to Vote

There will be a UK Parliament Election (General Election) on Thursday 4 July 2024. 

To vote at the UK general election you must be registered to vote and:

• be 18 years of age or over on polling day
• be a British, Irish or qualifying Commonwealth citizen
• be resident at an address in the UK or be a UK citizen living abroad
• not be legally excluded from voting

Voter ID

Returning Postal Ballot Papers

Postal ballot papers can be handed into 40 John Street between the hours of 9-5pm Tuesday and Wednesday and to any Glasgow Polling Place on Thursday between 7am - 10pm. 

Electors can hand in 5 postal votes plus their own, they do not need to Photo ID to do this, however they will be asked to complete a "Postal Vote Return Form". 

Any postal vote which has been handed in without the Postal Vote Return Form will not be counted

Emergency Proxy Vote

In certain circumstances, where you have an emergency that means you can't vote in person, you can apply for an Emergency Proxy.

This must be something that you weren't aware of before the normal proxy vote deadline, 5pm Wednesday 26 June. Emergency Proxy applications can be made up to 5pm on polling day.

You can apply for an emergency proxy for the following reasons:

• You have a medical emergency (PDF)
• You are away for work (PDF)
• Your photo ID is lost, stolen, destroyed or damaged (PDF) after the deadline to apply for a Voter Authority Certificate has passed (5pm Wednesday 26 June). This form can also be used if your Anonymous Elector's Document is lost, stolen, destroyed or damaged (UK Parliament elections or recall petitions only).

Voting Methods

There are 3 ways to cast your vote.

In person

In person at your polling station. Please note that you will need photo ID to vote in person. 

You can find information on accepted forms are ID at https://www.gov.uk/how-to-vote/photo-id-youll-need

You will only need to show one form of photo ID. It needs to be the original version and not a photocopy. The photo on your ID must look like you. You can still use your ID even if it has expired.

You can apply for a free voter ID document, known as a Voter Authority Certificate, if:

• you do not have accepted photo ID
• you no longer look like the photo on your ID
• the name on your photo ID is different to your name on the electoral register

You need to be registered to vote before you apply for a Voter Authority Certificate.

The deadline to register to vote for this election is midnight Tuesday 18 June 2024.  The deadline to apply for a Voter Authority Certificate for this election is 5pm Wednesday 26 June 2024.

By Postal Vote

If you know that you won't be able to get to the polling station on polling day. You can also choose to vote by post simply because it would be more convenient for you.

The deadline to apply for a postal vote for this election is 5pm Wednesday 19 June 2024.

If you are unable to sign the form or sign in a consistent way, print the application form or need it in an accessible format, please contact our office on 0141 287 4444.

Please ensure you can receive and return your postal ballot pack before the close of poll. 

• Depending on when you apply for it, your postal vote pack will be sent out between 12 and 6 working days before polling day.
• Your completed postal vote pack must arrive at the return address by 10pm on polling day to be valid.

• Postal votes are delivered by Royal Mail in the UK and local mail delivery services internationally. If post is likely to take longer than six working days to reach you and be returned to the UK, a proxy vote may be a better option.

By Proxy Vote

If you know that you won't be able to get to the polling station on polling day, you can ask someone you trust to cast your vote on your behalf. This is called a proxy vote and the person casting your vote is often referred to as your proxy.

The person voting on your behalf can either go to your polling station to cast your vote or can apply to vote on your behalf by post (known as a postal proxy).

The deadline for new for a new proxy application for this election is 5pm Wednesday 26 June 2024.

The deadline for postal proxy applications is 5pm Wednesday 19 June 2024

You can apply online for some types of proxy vote, you can apply online at https://www.gov.uk/apply-proxy-vote

Before you apply, ask your proxy's permission. Your proxy must be:

• 18 or over for UK Parliament elections
• registered to vote
• able to get to your polling station on polling day or if they can't get to the polling station they can apply to vote on your behalf by post (postal proxy vote).
• eligible to vote in the election

Your proxy does not have to be related to you.

At UK Parliament elections, someone can only be a proxy for two people based in the UK. If they are acting as proxy for people living overseas, you can act as proxy for up to four people but only two of these can be based in the UK.

Please note at UK Parliament elections your proxy will need to show their own photo ID when voting in the polling station on your behalf.
